Ancient Heart – Hand Forged 1065 Carbon Steel Katana Sword
The shinogi-zukuri (ridgeline) grind on a working katana is not decoration – it is engineering. The raised central ridge of the Ancient Heart / 木心古魂 distributes blade stress laterally along the flat, directing force away from the edge during cuts. Paired with 1065 high carbon steel finished in 烤金 (a baked-gold heat coloring applied to the flat after oil quench), this blade does two things at once: it performs, and it looks unlike anything else on your rack.

The Steel
1065 high carbon steel sits at a hardness range of approximately 58-60 HRC after oil quench and temper – hard enough to hold a working edge through sustained cutting sessions, tough enough to absorb the lateral shock that would chip a more brittle blade. The 烤金 finish is not paint or coating. It is a controlled oxidation process applied to the steel surface under heat, producing a warm gold-amber tone that reads differently depending on the light source. Under overhead fluorescent it is brassy and bold. In natural light it shifts toward antique amber. That oxidation layer also provides a mild barrier against surface rust, though it does not replace regular oil maintenance.
At 0.7 cm thick at the spine tapering through the shinogi-zukuri geometry, the blade has meaningful mass behind the edge without sacrificing the distal taper that makes a 72 cm nagasa (blade length) cut cleanly rather than push.
In Your Hands
The 27 cm tsuka (handle) gives you a genuine two-hand grip with room to spare – your lead hand seats at the fuchi (handle collar) and your trailing hand locks in near the kashira (pommel cap) with no crowding between them. The cotton ito wrap, wound in the traditional diamond pattern over the same-kawa (rayskin) beneath, grips without biting. After an extended cutting session the cotton compresses slightly and the rayskin nodes telegraph through – you always know exactly where your hands are. The Aohada saya (green bark wood sheath) has a natural textural grain that makes blind re-sheathing intuitive. The draw is smooth, the koiguchi (sheath mouth) fitted close enough to hold without friction that fights you.
Care
After each use, wipe the blade down with a clean cloth before applying a light coat of choji oil (clove-infused mineral oil, traditional for Japanese blades) or food-grade mineral oil. The 烤金 oxidation finish will gradually develop a patina with use – this is normal and does not indicate damage. Store horizontally in the saya, edge up, in a low-humidity environment.
