Black Heaven Feather – Hand Forged 1045 Carbon Steel Katana Sword
A blade finished in the special process 1045 steel treatment that produces an appearance this particular – dark, layered, and shot through with a feathered surface quality that reads differently under every light source – does not arrive at that look by accident. The Black Heaven Feather (黑天羽) earns its name from the way the blade’s processed surface catches and scatters light along its 72 cm length, suggesting movement even when the sword is mounted and still.

Forged in Longquan
Longquan’s sword district has been producing blades for over 2,600 years, and the finishing techniques applied to this katana draw directly from that accumulated craft knowledge. The special surface process applied to the 1045 carbon steel body produces a dark, non-reflective field across the flat (ji) of the blade, interrupted by the structural geometry of the shinogi-zukuri (ridgeline) profile. That ridgeline catches light differently than the surrounding surface – the contrast between the matte flat and the sharper geometry at the shinogi is the visual signature of the Black Heaven Feather in directional light.
The aohada (green bark wood) sheath provides a green-grey ground that offsets the blade’s dark finish when the two are displayed together. Against a light wall, the combination of dark blade, green saya, and the diamond-pattern cotton ito wrap on the handle produces a tonal range that photographs with strong contrast and displays with a coherence that cheaper decorative pieces rarely achieve. The alloy fittings are finished to match the blade’s subdued, non-flashy visual register – nothing here competes with the blade surface itself.
Weight, Balance, Draw
Mounted horizontally, the Black Heaven Feather presents as a full-sized katana at 103 cm total length – substantial on a wall without dominating a room. The handle’s 27 cm length and cotton ito wrap give it visual mass that balances the blade’s length when viewed from across a space. The diamond-wrapped cotton ito texture reads clearly even at distance, which matters when this piece is the focal point of a display rather than something handled regularly. The saya’s koiguchi (saya mouth) fit is firm, keeping the blade secure during wall mounting or repositioning without requiring a separate locking mechanism.
Keeping It Sharp
Because this is a display piece, maintenance is primarily about protecting the blade surface finish. Wipe down with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints after handling – skin oils will dull the processed surface over time. Apply a light coat of choji oil or mineral oil every few months to prevent surface oxidation, and keep the piece away from high-humidity environments that can compromise both the blade finish and the wooden saya.
