Bone-Searing Lotus – Hand Forged 1045 Carbon Steel Katana Sword
There is a specific visual event that happens when deep red meets high-gloss black lacquer and the carved floral relief of the saya catches the light at an angle. That is the event 蚀骨红莲 – Bone-Searing Lotus – is built around. The hollow carved sheath (实木钢琴烤漆空心花) is not decorative in the minor sense of the word. It is structural to the identity of this piece.

Steel & Construction
The blade is forged in shinogi-zukuri (鎬造) geometry, the traditional ridgeline profile that gives classical katana blades their characteristic cross-section: a defined spine, a flat panel, a beveled edge. The 1045 carbon steel is treated through a special surface process that gives the blade a finished appearance distinct from raw-polished steel – controlled, intentional, visually aligned with the red-and-black palette this piece inhabits. The alloy fittings are finished to coordinate with the overall color composition, the tsuba (hand guard) bridging the transition from the blade’s cool finish to the lacquered warmth of the saya.
The saya itself demands attention. Solid wood forms the core, shaped precisely to the blade’s curve, and the exterior is finished in piano lacquer before the hollow carved floral motifs are cut through the surface. Those carvings – the 空心花, hollow flower work – open windows through the lacquer into the wood beneath, creating a layered visual depth that flat-painted or plain lacquered sheaths simply cannot produce. The lotus reference in the name 蚀骨红莲 runs through the whole piece, from the floral carvings in the saya to the red tones carried through the fittings and handle elements.
Handling
The 27 cm cotton ito handle wrap is laid in the diamond pattern standard to classical katana construction, the cotton firm and closely wound. The full 102 cm length of the piece, from the tip of the saya to the end of the handle, balances the visual drama of the carved sheath against the cooler blade when the sword is drawn and held alongside. Mounted horizontally, the carved relief of the saya faces the room and the lotus motif reads clearly at a comfortable viewing distance. The alloy fittings catch ambient light without overwhelming the carved lacquer work – the piece holds together visually whether lit directly or in ambient room light.
Care Instructions
Clean the blade surface with a soft, lint-free cloth and a light application of camellia oil to maintain the special-process finish. For the saya, use a dry or very lightly dampened soft cloth on the piano lacquer sections and a soft brush to clear dust from the hollow carved relief without snagging. Avoid storing in direct sunlight, which will gradually affect both the lacquer depth and the alloy fittings’ surface finish over time.
