Crimson Eclipse – Hand Forged 65Mn Spring Steel Katana Sword
65Mn spring steel does not get the press that T10 or high-layer Damascus gets, but practitioners who have trained with it know exactly why it earns its place in a working blade. The Crimson Eclipse 绯红蚀日 is built on a shinogi-zukuri (ridgeline) profile ground from 65Mn, oil quenched and tempered – a blade optimized for the kind of use that would stress lesser steel into failure.

What the Steel Does
65Mn is a manganese-silicon spring steel. The elevated manganese content improves hardenability – meaning the steel can be hardened deeper through the cross-section – while the spring steel designation reflects its engineered capacity to flex under load and return to geometry. Oil quenching, rather than water, reduces the thermal shock of the quench and lowers the risk of warping or cracking in a blade with the geometry and length of a full-size katana. After quench, the blade is tempered to reduce brittleness while retaining the hardness the edge needs.
What this means in practice: 65Mn is notably forgiving under lateral stress. It bends before it breaks, and in a blade this length, that property matters. The trade-off relative to higher-carbon steels is that 65Mn does not reach the same peak edge hardness – but the edge retention is sufficient for serious training, and the toughness advantage is real.
The Feel of It
At 72.0 cm of blade and a 27.0 cm handle, the Crimson Eclipse sits at a classical full-size katana proportion – the handle is long enough for a confident two-hand grip with both hands fully engaged. The cotton ito wrap is firm underhand, the diamond braid pattern pressing into the palm and giving purchase without roughness. The aohada (green bark wood) saya draws cleanly – the green-grey surface of this material is slightly waxy to the touch, and the blade clears it with a smooth, consistent resistance from throat to tip.
Maintenance Notes
65Mn is reactive steel – it will develop surface oxidation quickly if left unprotected after use. Wipe the blade down after every session and apply a light coat of oil before storage. A thin application of choji oil or equivalent mineral oil is sufficient. Check the ito wrap periodically for loosening at the knots – cotton holds well but benefits from occasional inspection.
