Dark Phantom – Hand Forged High Carbon Steel Katana Sword
The Dark Phantom (玄影) is a full-length katana unlike any other in our collection — a shinogi-zukuri carbon steel blade finished with a titanium coating (镀钛) that gives the sword a deep, almost supernatural darkness from tip to fuchi. Where most katanas reveal themselves in reflected light, the Dark Phantom absorbs it, presenting a matte-black profile that makes its iron fittings and green bark wood saya appear to emerge from shadow. This is the katana for the collector who finds beauty in restraint and power in darkness.

Craftsmanship & Materials
The Dark Phantom begins as a functional carbon steel katana forged in the classic shinogi-zukuri ridgeline profile — the same geometry trusted by samurai for centuries, with a pronounced shinogi running parallel to the blade’s spine and a clean, angled bevel sweeping to the cutting edge. The carbon steel core is oil quenched and tempered in the traditional manner, hardening the ha (cutting edge) while preserving toughness in the mune (spine). This is a properly functional blade before the defining final step is ever applied.
That final step is the titanium physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating (镀钛) — a modern surface treatment applied at the molecular level that bonds a titanium compound layer to the blade surface without altering its geometry or compromising the heat treatment beneath. The result is a blade with exceptional corrosion resistance that surpasses uncoated carbon steel, a surface hardness that protects against minor abrasions, and the signature dark, near-black appearance that defines the Dark Phantom’s visual identity. The hamon — the oil-quenched temper line — remains visible beneath the coating as a ghostly shadow along the edge, a phantom within the phantom.
Iron fittings were chosen deliberately for this sword: where copper or gold might soften the Dark Phantom’s severe aesthetic, raw iron tsuba and fuchi-kashira reinforce it. Iron has its own austere beauty — it oxidizes to deep greys and browns with age, developing a surface character that grows richer over time. Against the dark blade and the mottled Aohada saya, the iron fittings create a monochromatic, meditative composition that rewards close attention. Cotton ito wrapping on the tsuka provides the grip’s only textural warmth.
Perfect For
- Contemporary aesthetic collectors — the titanium-coated blade and iron fittings make the Dark Phantom a striking choice for modern interiors where conventional polished-steel swords might feel anachronistic.
- Low-maintenance sword owners — the titanium coating dramatically reduces the corrosion vulnerability of the underlying carbon steel, making this katana ideal for those who want less frequent oiling and maintenance.
- Photographers & visual artists — the Dark Phantom’s non-reflective black blade creates dramatic contrast in photography, film props, and staged display compositions.
Care & Maintenance
The titanium coating on the Dark Phantom significantly reduces — but does not eliminate — the maintenance needs of the underlying carbon steel; wipe the blade clean after handling and apply a very light coat of mineral oil every 4–6 weeks, especially around the edge where the coating may be thinnest. Avoid abrasive cleaning materials or polishing compounds entirely, as these will scratch and degrade the titanium surface layer and compromise the sword’s signature appearance. The iron fittings should be lightly oiled as well to manage oxidation — or allowed to develop their natural patina naturally, which only deepens the Dark Phantom’s austere character over time.
