Dark Star – Hand Forged 1065 Carbon Steel Katana Sword
The shinogi ridge – the raised longitudinal line that defines the classical katana cross-section – runs the full 72 cm of this blade without interruption, and that geometry is not decorative. It is structural. The Dark Star is built around 1065 high carbon steel and a consistent heat treatment designed to deliver predictable, repeatable performance across training sessions, across seasons, and across years of serious use.

Forged in Longquan
1065 carbon steel sits at a well-understood point on the carbon curve – high enough to harden properly, low enough to remain tough under dynamic loading. At 0.65% carbon, this steel reaches hardness levels that hold a working edge through extended use without crossing into the brittle range where a blade becomes unreliable under lateral stress. The Dark Star is heat treated using a controlled isothermal furnace process – 马沸炉恒温热处理 in the forge’s terminology – which means the blade is brought to austenitizing temperature and quenched under controlled, consistent conditions. This eliminates the variation that comes with traditional hand-eye quenching and produces a blade where the hardness is uniform along the full length of the edge, not concentrated in zones or trailing off toward the tip.
The shinogi-zukuri (ridgeline) profile keeps the blade geometry clean. The shinogi divides the flat (ji) from the beveled area above the edge (ha), concentrating mass along the spine where it contributes to structural integrity while keeping the edge geometry efficient. At 3.2 cm width and 0.7 cm spine thickness, this is a full-dimension working katana – not a light show piece, not an oversized display piece, but a blade dimensioned to the proportions that have proven themselves over centuries of actual use.
Weight, Balance, Draw
The 26 cm tsuka (handle) gives a confident two-handed purchase. Genuine rayskin (same) under the cotton ito wrap is not a cosmetic choice – the nodular surface of the ray skin mechanically locks the wrap from rotating and provides grip friction even through the cotton layer, so the handle does not shift in the hand under impact. The high-gloss lacquered hardwood saya (scabbard) offers a smooth, consistent draw with enough friction at the koiguchi (sheath mouth) to retain the blade securely during carry or transit. The overall proportions of this katana – 72 cm blade, 26 cm handle, 102 cm total – sit at the classical full-length specification, giving it the leverage geometry that two-handed cuts require.
Keeping It Sharp
1065 carbon steel will develop surface rust quickly in humid conditions – oil the blade after every session with choji oil or a food-grade mineral oil. Use a soft cloth or rice paper (uchiko) for application; never use abrasive materials on the polished surfaces. Store in the saya in a dry location and re-oil on a regular schedule if the blade sits unused for extended periods.
