Jade Cold Edge – Hand Forged 1065 Carbon Steel Katana Sword
玉衡寒锋 – Jade Cold Edge – takes its name from the fourth star of the Ursa Major constellation, the one ancient Chinese astronomers used to orient celestial measurements. The blade lives up to the precision implied in that name: a 1065 high carbon steel katana, shinogi-zukuri (ridgeline) profile, built through a special process finishing treatment that pushes the edge and surface geometry beyond the baseline for production blades at this steel grade.

Steel & Construction
1065 high carbon steel is chosen by working practitioners for a straightforward reason: it is honest steel. The carbon content is high enough to support a proper cutting edge – one that sharpens cleanly, holds under repeated work, and can be restored in the field without specialized equipment. The special process designation on this build refers to an additional refinement step applied to the blade during production, addressing the surface and edge geometry beyond what a standard 1065 grind delivers. The result is a blade that arrives with the edge work already done correctly, not as a baseline to improve from.
Oil quench and temper locks the metallurgy in at a hardness level appropriate for the alloy – stable, predictable, and not brittle. The shinogi-zukuri profile distributes the steel mass deliberately: a reinforced spine for structural integrity, a clear ridgeline that defines the upper flat from the beveled edge section, and a geometry at the ha (cutting edge) that enters a target with less resistance than a flat or hollow grind of equivalent width. The 3.2 cm blade width and 0.7 cm spine are proportions that support sustained use rather than a single dramatic performance.
Handling
The green aohada (bark wood) saya has a fitted koiguchi (sheath mouth) that holds the blade secure without requiring a locking mechanism – the fit is the mechanism. The draw is clean and direct, the release point definite. In hand, the 27.0 cm cotton ito-wrapped handle fills both grips without crowding; the wrap texture keeps the hand positioned correctly through a full arc without relying on squeeze pressure. The 72.0 cm blade at the end of a 103.0 cm overall length is a katana in its proper proportion – long enough for genuine reach, short enough that the tip remains responsive and controlled.
Care Instructions
Carbon steel at this specification requires consistent maintenance – oil the blade after every use with choji oil (a light mineral oil traditionally scented with clove), and store it unsheathed or with a light wrap in environments where humidity is variable. The zinc alloy fittings do not require special treatment but should be kept dry. Inspect the cotton ito wrap regularly and re-wrap at the first sign of loosening at the handle ends.
