Jade Whisper – Hand Forged 1065 Carbon Steel Katana Sword
The Jade Whisper runs a 72 cm blade of 1065 high carbon steel through a salt-bath furnace heat treatment that locks in a hardness range suited to real cutting work. The smoke-blue finish on the blade is not paint – it is a controlled oxidation process that leaves the steel surface darkened and visually distinctive against the high-gloss lacquered hardwood saya (scabbard). A shinogi-zukuri (ridgeline) profile gives the blade its characteristic raised central ridge, and at 0.7 cm thick the geometry is built to push through resistance cleanly.

The Steel
1065 sits at a practical sweet spot for a functional katana. The carbon content is high enough that the blade holds a working edge through repeated sessions without constant resharpening, but the steel retains enough toughness that it is not brittle under lateral stress. The constant-temperature salt-bath process – referred to in Longquan as 马沸炉 恒温热处理 – ensures the heat penetrates the steel uniformly rather than relying on open flame or variable atmospheric furnaces. The result is consistent hardness across the full length of the blade, not just near the edge.
The smoke-blue surface treatment serves a secondary function beyond its appearance: it provides a mild corrosion barrier across the flat of the blade, reducing the rate of oxidation during storage and between practice sessions. It does not replace proper oiling, but it does give the steel a degree of passive protection that a plain polished finish does not.
In Your Hands
The 26 cm tsuka (handle) is wrapped in cotton ito over genuine rayskin – the same-kawa (rayskin base layer) creates a firm, slightly textured ground that keeps the wrap seated under torque. The cotton ito is crossed in the traditional diamond pattern, giving defined purchase points for the fingers during gripping shifts. Drawing from the high-gloss lacquer saya, the blade comes free cleanly, the lacquered interior surface offering just enough resistance to prevent accidental draw while releasing crisply when the draw is intentional.
Care
After each session, wipe the blade down with a clean cloth and apply a thin coat of choji oil or food-grade mineral oil to prevent oxidation. The high-gloss lacquer saya can be cleaned with a lightly dampened cloth – avoid abrasive materials that will cut the finish. Store the blade horizontally, edge up, away from humidity.
