Reaper Straight – Hand Forged High Carbon Steel Katana Sword
What separates this version of the Reaper Straight (収割者-直刃绕绳板) from its siblings is the handle construction – the cord-wrapped plate tsuka (handle with a wrapped-panel build-up) gives the grip a distinctly textured, layered profile that reads as a different object entirely when placed next to a standard ito-wrapped katana on a display wall. The cord winding sits proud of the handle core, creating a surface that photographs with visible depth and casts its own shadow lines in raking light.

What the Steel Does
The blade is rust-resistant carbon steel with a titanium surface coating applied after oil quench and temper heat treatment. Titanium coatings are physically harder than the steel beneath them and chemically inert against the moisture and oils in a typical indoor display environment – the surface does not oxidize, does not fingerprint visibly, and does not require the regular oiling that bare carbon steel demands. The shinogi-zukuri (ridgeline) forging style gives the 72.0 cm / 28.3 in blade its characteristic two-faceted upper flat, which catches directional light as a faint secondary highlight running the blade’s full length.
The dark titanium tone against the iron tsuba (handguard) and habaki (blade collar) creates a near-monochrome aesthetic – no bright metal anywhere on the piece to pull the eye away from the blade geometry and handle texture.
The Feel of It
Lift this piece from its mount and the cord-wrapped plate handle communicates immediately through the palm – the raised cord lines run perpendicular to the grip axis, creating a ridged texture that feels entirely different from standard ito diamond-wrap. The handle runs 27.0 cm / 10.6 in, long enough that both hands find distinct grip zones along that textured surface. The saya (scabbard) is lacquered solid wood in the half-K style, firm at the koiguchi (scabbard mouth) and smooth along the body, drawing clean and seating with a quiet click.
Maintenance Notes
Titanium-coated blades require minimal routine care – a dry microfiber wipe every few weeks removes dust and ambient oils without needing any product. The cord-wrapped handle can accumulate dust in the cord channels; a soft brush clears this without disturbing the wrapping. Iron fittings at the tsuba and habaki should receive a light application of camellia or mineral oil twice a year to prevent surface oxidation in humid environments.
