Wrathful Flame – Hand Forged 1065 Carbon Steel Katana Sword
1065 high carbon steel sits at a well-understood point on the hardness curve – hard enough to hold a keen edge through sustained cutting sessions, tough enough to flex rather than chip when it meets resistance. This is not a steel that surprises you. That reliability is the point.

Forged in Longquan
The 怒焰 – Wrathful Flame – is forged to the shinogi-zukuri (ridgeline) profile, the workhorse geometry of the Japanese katana. The ridge runs the length of the blade and creates a blade cross-section that distributes stress efficiently through a cut. At 3.2 cm width and 0.7 cm thickness, the geometry is standard and tested. The oil quench and temper heat treatment brings 1065 into a hardness range that practitioners recognise: enough edge retention for repeated cuts without the brittleness risk of harder steels.
1065 is a forgiving steel in the best sense. It responds well to sharpening in the field – you are not fighting the steel when you maintain it. The edge bevel re-establishes cleanly, and the blade’s toughness means lateral stress during a cut does not introduce micro-fractures at the edge. This is a blade you can work hard and maintain without specialist tools.
Weight, Balance, Draw
At 103 cm total with a 72 cm blade and a 27 cm cotton ito-wrapped handle, the 怒焰 sits at standard katana proportions. The cotton ito wrap is wound tight and cross-laced in the traditional diagonal pattern, giving the grip positive traction without bulk. The aohada (bark wood) saya fits the blade snugly – the draw is smooth and consistent, with no binding at the koiguchi (mouth of the sheath). The 27 cm handle accommodates a full two-handed grip with room to shift position.
Keeping It Sharp
After each cutting session, wipe the blade clean of moisture and organic material immediately – 1065 will begin to surface rust if left damp. Apply a thin coat of choji oil before storage. Sharpen with progressively finer whetstones and finish on a 3000-grit or higher to restore the edge bevel cleanly.
