Cold Peak Radiance – Hand Forged Carbon Steel Katana Sword
What makes the Cold Peak Radiance (寒锋白耀) stand apart on a wall or in a display case is the relationship between its blade treatment and its name – the 烤蓝 (kaolan) bluing process produces a steel surface that sits somewhere between deep indigo and cold silver depending on the angle of incident light, and that shift is precisely what the characters 白耀 (white radiance) describe: not a static color but a surface that appears to emit cool light rather than simply reflect it.

What the Steel Does
The 烤蓝 process – heat-induced bluing – creates a controlled iron oxide layer on the blade surface that produces the characteristic cool-toned coloration. This is not paint, not coating applied over the steel: it is the steel’s own surface chemistry altered by heat and atmosphere in a controlled environment. The result is a finish with depth and a faint iridescence that a mirror-polished or matte blade simply cannot produce. In natural light, the blade reads blue-grey. Under warm artificial light, it shifts toward violet at the edges and silver at the shinogi (ridgeline) where the geometry creates a different surface angle.
The shinogi-zukuri profile – the classical ridgeline construction of a full katana – does meaningful visual work here. The ridgeline is not just a structural feature; it divides the blade’s face into two planes that catch light independently, which means the blue finish appears to shift and move when the blade is rotated slowly in its mount. At 3.2 cm wide across a 72 cm blade length, the geometry provides enough surface area for that color play to register from across a room.
The Feel of It
At 103 cm total length and with a 27 cm cotton ito-wrapped handle, the Cold Peak Radiance presents with the proportions of a full-sized working katana – which is precisely why it displays so convincingly. The aohada (green bark wood) saya provides a complementary color register: the cool green-grey of the bark wood surface sits alongside the blued blade without competing, and the contrast between the two when the blade is partially drawn makes for a compelling photographic subject. Mounted horizontally with the saya beside it, the full color palette of this piece – blued steel, green bark, wrapped handle – is legible and intentional.
Maintenance Notes
The blued finish requires some specific attention to preserve its appearance over time. Fingerprints should be wiped away promptly with a soft cloth, as the oils in skin contact can break down the oxide layer if left for extended periods. Apply a thin film of choji oil or neutral mineral oil every few months, and avoid storing the piece in high-humidity environments or in direct sunlight, which can cause uneven fading of the blued surface.
